Perhaps you have already heard of leakage current under the term "current leakage" or even "electrical leakage"? This electrical phenomenon can be very dangerous for you and for your electrical installation. It also causes overconsumption and therefore increases your electricity bills.

Leakage current: what is it and where does it come from?
Leakage current is an electrical phenomenon with serious consequences. Electrical leakage can indeed be dangerous for humans by causing electrification. It also drives up electricity bills by causing overconsumption of electricity.

Leakage current: a loss of electric current to earth
Leakage current is the loss of electric current to earth or to conductive elements such as water or a metal object. This is an anomaly in the electrical installation of a home.

In common parlance, leakage current is sometimes referred to as current leakage or electrical leakage. More rarely, we also speak of earth leakage. This term is appropriate if the electrical fault detected on your installation is indeed a loss of current to the earth and not to another conductive element in your home such as metal.

We can compare an electrical leak to a flow of water from a closed circuit where water circulates continuously:

imagine that this water circuit is supplied with water at a point A; the water then circulates to point B via a first portion. Part of the water is consumed at this point B. This first portion represents the phase cable;
the water then leaves via a second portion from point B to point A. This portion represents the neutral cable;
now imagine that the flow of water suddenly increases. The water would then flow out of the circuit and be evacuated via a recovery mechanism.
