HOW TO LOWER YOUR Electricity UTILITY BILLS AND SAVE MONEY

Power savers use capacitors for this purpose. ... Thus, the power saver not only protects the appliance but also increases its life. Moreover, they also reduce energy consumption and thus the electricity bills. The amount of power saved by a power save depends on the number of appliances on the electrical circuit.

Keeping the lights on isn’t cheap — never mind the air conditioning, furnace and hot water heater. In fact, the typical family spends more than $1,400 per year on utilities, according to the Energy Department.

Tweaking your usage can lower your bill by as much as 25%. Try these effective ways to save money:

Check seals on windows, doors and appliances.

Fix leaky ductwork.

Give your thermostat a nudge.

Adjust your fridge and freezer temperature.

Take shorter showers.

Replace your showerhead.

Don’t wash clothes in hot water.

Fix leaky faucets.

Adjust the temperature on your water heater.

Purchase energy-efficient appliances.

Ask about discounted rates.

Swap out your lightbulbs.

Install dimmer switches.

Use smart power strips.

Do an energy audit.

  1. Capacitors are applied to correct Power Factor (pf). Electricity is charged with kWh and not kVA. Therefore, there will be no change in the utility bill.

  2. Hello Joomunm, kWh is a function of voltage, current, power factor with respect to time. It's true that capacitors when applied corrects power factor. When you operate on a poor power factor, you generate a lot of reactive power (kVar) in the system which increases your load demand (kVA) and your connected load (which is lagging) consumes high current to meet up the deficiency in the system thereby making your energy (kwh) consumption high. When you improve your poor power factor (by adding capacitors into the system), your load demand (kva) reduces, reactive power (kvar) in the system cancels (because capacitors generate reactive power making the system to have a leading power factor) and load current also reduces. At the end of the month, energy consumption has reduced drastically.

Also note that real power (kW) or total connected load is the same in each of the aforementioned cases.
