A transfer switch (ATS) is an electrical switch that switches a load between two sources. Often, an automatic transfer switch is installed where a standby generator is located, so that the generator can provide temporary electrical power in the event of a power source failure.
When utility power is interrupted, the automatic transfer switch immediately detects the problem and signals the generator to start. Then it detects the return of utility power, the automatic transfer switch returns to utility power and shuts down the generator.
