A current is said to be alternating when it flows alternately in one direction and then in the other at regular intervals called cycles.


Alternating electric current is defined in opposition to direct current.
Unlike the latter, the current (or more precisely the circulation of electrons) changes the direction of the path.

 It is a periodic current since it changes direction twice per period. It is measured in hertz (Hz).

The hertz measures the number of round trips made by the electric current during one second.

In alternating current, electrons move back and forth and can change direction 100 times per second. This variation is essential, because the transformers of the transmission lines only work by receiving this flow of alternating electrons. Inside the transformer, the voltage of the energy sent increases, allowing it to travel far, for example from a power station to your home.
