A light ray which enters a prism in principle undergoes two refractions before leaving it, it is therefore deviated by a certain angle called deviation.

We first study here the condition of emergence of a ray (so that it does not undergo a total reflection on the second diopter); then the deviation of a ray which would emerge.


The deviation depends only on the angle of incidence at the first diopter if A (the angle at the top of the prism) and n the index of the prism are known. We show graphically that this passes through a minimum, and obtain a formula giving this minimum deviation as a function of i, n and A.
