Electronic Basics #21: Op Amp (Operational Amplifier)

Electronic Basics #21: Op Amp (Operational Amplifier)

In this episode of Electronic Basics I will explain the three golden rules when working with OpAmps and how to use them in order to understand and build all kind of OpAmp circuits. The main focus will be the noninverting and inverting amplifier and the comparator circuit.

In this video I provide all the essentials or basics about the op amp or operational amplifier: what an op amp is, op amp basics, gain, differential inputs, input impedance, output impedance, op amp characteristics, offset null, power supplies. . . all you need to know.

An operational amplifier is a high gain differential amplifier. I describe the op amp circuit symbol and then move on to look at what a differential amplifier is and how this applies to the op amp. I look at operational amplifier common mode rejection ratio, CMMR.

Descriptions of the power rails and how to power an operational amplifier from both differential supplies and from a single supply as well as the op amp offset null connections – what they are and how they may be used.

Finally I take a look at some op-amp applications including amplifiers, filters and many more. Operational amplifiers are probably one of the most versatile circuit blocks available.
