on video We turn PVC pipe into Hight speed water pump without electricity easy way

The hydraulic ram is an ecological and autonomous mechanism for pumping water. It was imagined by Joseph de Montgolfier in 1792. Indeed, it was this same brother Montgolfier who, ten years earlier, flew the first hot air balloon with his brother Étienne.

What is a hydraulic ram?

The hydraulic ram works without any other energy than that of the captured water. The water hammer is at the origin of the mechanism: when you suddenly close a tap, the pipe makes a noise, due to the stoppage of the flow and the inertia of the moving mass of water.

With more than two centuries of existence, it is the most ecological, the most economical, the most reliable and the most durable sewage pump known today. And this because it works non-stop without any additional energy input.

For the ram to work, two conditions must be met:

a water supply with a permanent flow, equal to or greater than that of the ram (spring, stream, river, lake, etc.)

and the installation of a mechanism below the catchment. It is therefore the difference in height that will produce the driving energy.

How it works ?

The performance of a hydraulic ram depends on the flow rate and the ratio between the rise and fall of the water.

For example, the ideal conditions make it possible to achieve a yield of 20%, i.e. 20 liters pumped for 100 liters in "fall".

The water closes the first valve when it arrives in the pipe and then a shock wave is created. It then travels through the duct in the opposite direction, this is the water hammer. It can travel 15 m/sec in a plastic pipe and up to 1000 m/sec in a steel pipe.

The pressure opens the second clapper which allows the water to then rise in the bell.

The air pressure then repels the water which creates a new cycle. Indeed, the valve closes, the water rises and so on.

What is a hydraulic ram used for?

The hydraulic ram can supply water to a community, an agricultural business, a garden, or even a home, for example. It's just a question of water flow, machine size and financial means. This very inexpensive device requires almost no maintenance, it is very practical. Very suitable for isolated places or uneven relief, it can be used on the plain, because 50 cm of elevation is sufficient.

The principle uses kinetic energy. That is to say that when a column of water picks up speed and a valve suddenly stops it, an overpressure occurs, which allows the water to rise to a certain height. The result will of course depend on the quantities and speeds used.
