What is an eccentric sander?

The eccentric sander takes its particularity and its performance in its manufacture. Unlike other sanders, its plate is not directly connected to the motor shaft, which is for example the case of orbital sanders. The eccentric sander sees its plate connected to another intermediate plate, to allow it an oscillating movement during the rotation of the disc, therefore more versatility. Several parameters must be taken into account when choosing the eccentric sander:


The size of the tray: Several sizes of trays exist, to sand more or less large surfaces. Generally, the most standard classic range will be equipped with a 125mm chainring. The top of the range will have a 150 mm plate. The tray is equipped with a self-gripping surface;

The ergonomics of the sander: There are so-called "palm" models, which can be used with one hand. Professionals or good do-it-yourselfers will prefer to opt for a two-handed model, with a front handle in addition to the main handle, and powered by compressed air (pneumatic sander). The battery-powered sander will obviously be more mobile, but heavier, and a priori not necessary since there will always be a socket nearby for work on the house. Wired will therefore be preferable for amateurs;

The power of the sander: Its power is at the origin of the speed of rotation and the diameter of the orbit. It can vary from 200 to 750 W for the largest models, which will be heavier, therefore more difficult to use on long jobs. The most powerful will spin up to 13,000 revolutions per minute. Amateur DIY enthusiasts will largely be satisfied with a model between 200 and 400 W.

The eccentric sander: The most versatile sander

Also called "roto-orbital", the eccentric sander is ideal for sanding flat or curved surfaces, and for removing excess material. Beneath its discreet airs, it is extremely versatile thanks to its particular construction with an off-centre top. It may seem like nothing, but quite the opposite. This allows it to carry out all types of work, from rough sanding to finishing work. It can also be used perfectly as a polisher or polisher, to shine car bodies for example. It will obviously be necessary to equip it, not with an abrasive disc, but with a skin or a polishing disc. Finally, it is possible to work with plaster or to polish noble and delicate materials such as marble.


It will be ideal for a complete sanding of a wooden material. Metal will also appreciate eccentric sanding to remove a layer of rust, for example. On metal, the grit of the abrasive will be limited to 40 for roughing, 80 for stripping, and between 120 and 180 for finishing. Finally, it should be noted that it will not be wise to press too hard on the sander, at the risk of blocking the centrifugal force which drives the orbit of the plate randomly. Also, as with all power tools, it is strongly discouraged to use the eccentric model in wet areas. The start-up is carried out in the air before gently placing the device on the surface to be worked.
