on video Reciprocating Pumps | Working of Single acting and Double acting reciprocating pumps.

The hand pump is a type of "reciprocating pump" because of one main reason. The piston. The piston inside the pump moves up and down in a reciprocating manner to deliver us water. The pump has a piston with a one-way valve present in it. There is another one-way valve at the bottom of the hand pump.

However, manually moving a rod up and down is extremely tiring. Due to this automated pumps were introduced.

One such automated pump is the piston reciprocating pump. The pump has two one way valves and a piston. The linear motion of the piston is obtained by connecting it to a crank using a connecting rod. When the crank starts to rotate, the piston moves to and fro in the cylinder to pump the fluid.

But there is a small disadvantage with these pumps. Water is delivered in a pulsating manner for every stroke of the piston. To avoid this, a  double-acting piston was developed. These pumps were able to pump water continuously by utilising the reverse stroke of the piston too.

Piston reciprocating pumps can operate effectively without leakage at a pressure range of 3000psi. Any higher, the chances of leakage and damage to the piston are high.
