on video How an Automatic Transmission Works (Allison 1000)

Department of Automotive Technology - Transmission Laboratory. Allison 1000 MW7 6-speed automatic transmission and M74 5-speed 6-speed Power flow. The Allison 1000 is built by Allison Transmissions, a company owned by General Motors. This transmission is typically used in 2001 and newer Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Heavy-Duty C and K pickup trucks with the Isuzu 6.6L Duramax engine. This transmission uses a simple set of planetary gears to drive a set of Simpson planetary gears (common sun gears).

The following summarizes the changes made to the Allison 1000 over the years:

(2010 Uprate) MW7 - Strengthened to handle the higher torque capacity of the 2011 model year Duramax LGH and LML engines.

4th Generation MW7 - Added 6th gear and other software improvements in 2006. Used with Duramax LBZ, LLY and LMM engines 2006 - 2010.

3rd Generation M74 - Added "G" solenoid to valve body to modulate idle main pressure to quiet oil pump and reduce engine idle loads. Used with 2004 - 2005 LB7 and LLY Duramax engines as well as the 8.1L Chevrolet Big Block engine.

2nd Generation M74 - Valve body and housing modifications plus software enhancements to improve shift quality, timing and speed. Added "The Sound of Power" VHS video to the glove box on why Allison noises and clunks are good. Used with model years 2002 - 2003 and LB7 Duramax and 8.1L Big Block engines.

1st Generation M74 - The original Allison 1000 installed in 2001 Chevrolet and GMC Sierra trucks with the LB7 Duramax engine.
