A doorbell is a signaling device typically placed near a door to a building's entrance. When a visitor presses a button the bell rings inside the building, alerting the occupant to the presence of the visitor.

What voltage is a doorbell?

Transformer. Household current is typically 120 volts for most circuits. A few circuits, such as those for electric clothes dryers, require 240 volts. Since doorbells have such a low voltage requirement, they need a means of converting 120 volt current down to the 8 to 24 volts necessary to operate the chime.

Why does a doorbell need a transformer?

In installing the wire of the doorbell, the wire should be run to the back of each buzzer to the so-called doorbell transformer. The wiring of the doorbell requires a doorbell transformer which can be connected to a circuit with 20 volts of power. The doorbell transformer helps in reducing electric voltage by 12 volts.

What is a doorbell used for?

When you press a doorbell button, you complete an electrical circuit that allows household electricity to flow through the doorbell's internal electromagnet. The magnetic field generated by the electromagnet is then used to power a mechanism that creates the doorbell sound.

How many watts does a doorbell use?

The power consumption is not large -- on the order of 1 to 5 watts per transformer. But it does add up. Let's say that you have 10 of them, and they consume 5 watts each. That means that 50 watts are being wasted constantly.

How does an electric bell work?

An electric bell contains an electromagnet, consisting of coils of insulated wire wound round iron rods. When an electric current flows through the coils, the rods become magnetic and attract a piece of iron attached to a clapper. The clapper hits the bell and makes it ring.
