In a new single-family house or a new apartment, the implementation of control switches is covered by standard NF C 15-100 “Low voltage electrical installations”. The standard sets the minimum provisions to be observed for these devices, in terms of technical characteristics, location and minimum quantity for each room in the home. However, manufacturers offer a wide choice of terminal equipment in their respective catalogs in terms of functionality and design.

The different types of switches

In new homes, the NF C 15-100 standard requires that each main room (bedroom, living room, office, etc.), each utility room (kitchen, pantry, etc.) and each passage have at least one lighting point. This lighting point must have a fixed, manual or automatic control switch.

However, the control of a circuit (lighting, heating, shutters, etc.) is not reduced to a simple manual switch that makes a "click-clack". Several solutions are to be considered:

the double ignition switch: this is a box comprising two simple switches to control two lighting points or two parts of the same luminaire
two-way switching: it allows you to switch on and / or switch off the same luminaire from two remote control points
the changeover switch: it allows you to add an additional control point to the two-way movement and therefore to turn on and / or off a luminaire from 3 remote switches
the remote control switch can be used to control lighting from more than two control points: it is frequently used to turn the lighting on or off in a hallway serving several rooms, using several push buttons regularly distributed in this hallway
the dimmer switch: it allows you to continuously vary the level of illumination provided by a luminaire.

It can be multi-load (i.e. suitable for all lamp technologies), or specific for energy saving lamps, without or with status indicator (to view the level of illumination)
the beacon switch: in the dark and / or in areas with obstacles
