Programmable Logic Controller Basics Explained - automation engineering

Programmable Logic Controller Basics Explained - automation engineering

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a component that is programmed and used for the control or regulation of a machine or installation. These controls are applied in very different industries, for example to control production plants, injection presses or precisely fully automated hardness testing machines.

A PLC is provided with inputs, outputs, an operating system (firmware) and an interface through which an application program (operating software) can be loaded. The application program defines how the outputs are to be switched depending on the inputs.

The operating system (firmware) ensures that the application program always has the current status of the sensors available to it. Based on this information, the application program can switch the outputs so that the machine or plant operates as expected.

The connection between the PLC and the machine is made by sensors and actuators. The sensors are connected to the PLC inputs and communicate to the PLC what is happening in the hardness testing machine. The sensors are for example probes, limit switches or force sensors (load cell). The actuators are connected to the outputs of the PLC and are used to control the hardness testing machine. Actuators are, for example, various servomotors intended for the application of force or for controlling axes

In this video we learn the basics of how programable logic controllers work, we look at how PLC's work, where they are used and how programable logic controllers replaced relay banks but still use relays. PLC Basics AND gate, automation engineering, what is a plc, logic gate
